Bio

THE TWA BARDS

FLUTE FIDDLE HARP GUITAR VOCALS

Tradition Bearer: Don 'Gypsy of the Celts: Vocals, Guitar, Flute, Bodhran
Angela: Vocals, Flute, Fiddle, Whistles, Harp.

Unique arrangements, vocal harmonies, song stories, duelling flutes and more… in a showcase of inimitable sco’s-aussie style.

Time-travelling tartan sunburnt hearts: may your pulse beat as your heart would wish!

Don discovered his Scottish history through songs and stories.

A love of the work of Robert Burns was a big part of the aural tradition shared. He’s been performing those songs and adding to that collection ever since.

Angela has classical roots that pretty quickly loosened up into folk and funk styles along the way!

Their love of musical conversation breathes the unexpected into every arrangement.

Original country-folk songs and tunes complement and bring flavour to the brew… like whiskey & haggis, chilli & chocolate!

All-round pied pipers… that play almost everything but!

May your pulse beat as your heart would wish (Scottish proverb) + Had we ne'er loved sae kindly, had we ne'er loved sae blindly, ne'er met or ne'er parted, we had ne'er been broken-hearted (Robert Burns) + the Irish blessing and a little bit of James Joyce.

The Golden Locks O' Annie

Ye monarchs, take the East and West frae Indus to Savannah; Gie me, within my straining grasp, The melting form of Anna – Robert Burns

The Twa Bards Virtual Set

Green grow the rushes o’, The Bonnie Earl o’ Moray, The Journeyman & Ca’ The Yowes, recorded for the Camperdown Burns Fest 🙂

The Four Marys

Traditional ballad; yester-treen there were four Mary's... Mary Seton and Mary Beaton, and Mary Carmichael and me. (Mary Hamilton).

Wullie Wastle & Drystane Dyker

Wullie Wastle; a comic poem by Robert Burns recited followed by a tune written and performed by Don Grieve called The Drystane Dyker.

Ecce Puer - James Joyce

Of the dark past a child is born
with joy and grief my heart is torn
calm in his cradle the living lies
may love and mercy unclose his eyes
Young life is breathed on the the glass;
the world that was not comes to pass
a child is sleeping: an old man gone
o, father forsaken, forgive your son

Song written by Angela Preiss - sung by Tracey Newman

The Deil's Awa & A Rosebud By

A taste of two very different Robert Burns poems – music by The Twa Bards. Nature and Human Nature were ever present themes for The Bard.

Ae Fond Kiss

Had we ne’er lov’d sae kindly, had we ne’er lov’d sae blindly, never met-or ne’er parted, we had ne’er been broken-hearted. – Robert Burns

Wild Rover Blues

What would happen if the wild rover got the blues? A favourite flute rambling foot tapper. You’ve never heard the wild rover like this before!

Lassie wi' the lint-white locks

Lassie wi’the lint-white locks, bonnie lassie, airtless lassie, Wilt thou wi’ me tent the flocks, Wilt thou be my Dearie, O? – Robert Burns

Don singing John o' Dreams on the banks of The Mosel River, after performing on a replica Roman Galley that was built by Trier University... shortly after many fine Mosel wines were tasted and more songs shared.

Don wrote this tune for his son Malcolm Grieve

My Jean

Of a’ the airts the wind can blaw, I dearly like the west, For there the bonie lassie lives, The lassie I lo’e best… a beautiful ballad – Robert Burns.

O wert thou in the cauld blast...

My plaidie to the angry airt, I’d shelter thee, I’d shelter thee… Robert Burns, featuring Don’s rich vocals, whistle & harp accompaniment.

A Lily Aye Ay

The Lilting Way - track from Play of Colours album - Instrumental Meditations inspired by the harp and flute; tunes written by Angela Preiss

A Flute Duel

The Butterfly with flute harmonies… Don is left-handed on flute which makes it fun to create a stereo standoff! Trad flute v Classical flute.

Bonnie Wee Thing

Wit, and grace, and love, and beauty, in ae the constellations shine; To adore thee is my duty, Goddess o’ this soul o’ mine! – Robert Burns
